From our pastor Father Neil Herlihy

The Catholic Church has a long and cherished history of caring for those in need of healing. Just think of the work of Mother Teresa and Elizabeth Ann Seton, now saints of our Church. They viewed those in need of healing as children of God deserving of care and love. Their devotion to the sick won the admiration of many. What inspired them most deeply was the vision of the sick as sisters or brothers of Christ. They believed that what they were doing for the sick, they were doing for Christ. By coming to their assistance, they believed that they were only fulfilling the mission of the gospel.

The Church also offers healing through the Anointing of the Sick, one of the seven sacraments. It is the proper sacrament for those Catholics who health is seriously impaired by sickness. It is administered by the priest on behalf of the whole community. We advise parishioners to participate in this wonderful sacrament of healing when appropriate and avail themselves of the power of Our Lord’s saving grace.

Many of us know someone who is sick in some way, someone who is in need of healing. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis recently addressed the importance of God’s presence in times of healing. He stated, “To cure the sick, to welcome them, to serve them, is to serve Christ: the sick person is the flesh of Christ. Each one of us is called to bear the light of the Word of God and the power of grace to those who suffer, and to those who assist them – families, doctors, and nurses – so that the service to the sick might always be better accomplished with more humanity, with generous dedication, with evangelical love, with tenderness. Mother Church, through our hands, caresses our sufferings and cures our wounds, and does so with the tenderness of a mother.”

LORD, YOU INVITE ALL WHO ARE BURDENED TO COME TO YOU.
ALLOW YOUR HEALING HAND TO HEAL ME.
TOUCH MY SOUL WITH YOUR COMPASSION FOR OTHERS.
TOUCH MY HEART WITH YOUR COURAGE AND INFINITE LOVE FOR ALL.
TOUCH MY MIND WITH YOUR WISDOM, THAT MY MOUTH MAY ALWAYS PROCLAIM YOUR PRAISE.
TEACH ME TO REACH OUT TO YOU IN MY NEED, AND HELP ME TO LEAD OTHERS TO YOU BY MY EXAMPLE.
MOST LOVING JESUS, BRING ME HEALTH IN BODY AND SPIRIT THAT I MAY SERVE YOU WITH ALL MY STRENGTH.
TOUCH GENTLY THIS LIFE WHICH YOU HAVE CREATED, NOW AND FOREVER. AMEN.
As we seek our own healing when necessary, we are also invited to share this prayer with those in need.
