The role of the cantor is to sing the Psalm and the Gospel Acclamation and, when necessary, help lead congregational singing during other parts of the Mass. In common practice, the Cantor also leads the congregation in singing hymns or other non-liturgical music.

Those who wish to serve as Cantors at Saint Brigid must also be willing to share their time with one of the ensembles in the Music Ministry, whether the Choir of Saint Brigid, Servant Song Ensemble, 4HG (the LifeTeen Band) or Sursum Corda (our Schola Cantorum). The Cantor must be committed to attend rehearsals and participate actively in the group.

Qualities a cantor should possess include:
  • An attitude of service.
  • Gratitude for the privilege of singing in the Lord's house.
  • A clear voice with good pronunciation.
  • Facility singing in English (need not be a native speaker).
  • Willingness to serve at a different Mass occasionally if needed.
  • Basic familiarity with liturgical guidelines.

Musical training is helpful (not necessarily a classically trained voice) because rehearsal time is limited and Cantors need to be able to learn music largely on their own. If you would like to serve as Cantor, speak with the Director of your ensemble. Please prepare a Responsorial Psalm and a Gospel Acclamation of your choice to present to the Director of Music at a mutually convenient time.
