2026 10-18 World Mission Sunday. “One Christ United in Mission”

Written by: Father Neil Herlihy

This Sunday is World Mission Sunday.  The theme for this Sunday, as provided by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, is “One in Christ, United in Mission.”  The bishops stated, “World Mission Day was first established by Pope Pius XI, beginning in October 1927.  This year the Church celebrates the 100th World Mission Day on Sunday, October 18, 2026.  As the Church prepares to celebrate this day, Pope Leo XIV calls us to unity in Christ, love, and renewed missionary commitment ‘with joy and zeal in the Holy Spirit’.”

In his message for World Mission Day, 2026, Pope Leo stated that “no baptized person is exempt from or indifferent to mission: everyone, each according to their vocation and condition in life, participates in the great work that Christ has entrusted to his Church.”  He further noted that “unity in mission means safeguarding and nurturing the spirituality of communion and missionary cooperation.”  Quoting Ephesians 4:5-6, he reminded the faithful that “we all share in one mission in ‘one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.’  This spirituality constitutes the daily expression of missionary discipleship. It helps us to recover a universal vision of the Church’s evangelizing mission.”

As Catholics, we are challenged to embrace the mission to see the face of Christ in others and to reach out to those in need.  We can spread Christian awareness through our involvement with the Saint Vincent dePaul Society, Catholic Charities, and other organizations that encourage Christian outreach.  In addition, we can spread the Gospel message by encouraging our civil leaders to enact laws that promote Catholic social teaching, especially in areas concerning the unborn, marriage and the family.

The following “Prayer for World Mission Sunday” from the media outlet “Prayerist” reflects the spirit of this day:

Lord, may your Mission become the central concern
for our Church community throughout the world.
Bring us closer to our brothers and sisters,
so that we bear witness of our faith in Christ and announce his Gospel.
Embolden us to go out and meet the many people
who ignore the good news that you love us and you want our happiness
through the construction of a better world, your kingdom!
We ask you this through Jesus, your greatest missionary with us,
forever and ever. Amen.

As we reflect on this prayer and celebrate World Mission Sunday, we are challenged to be witnesses to Christ as we strive to truly embrace the missionary spirit of our precious faith.
