As we know, we are in the midst of our summer season.  At this time of the year, many of us have an opportunity to take a break from school or work, and so we naturally focus more on leisure activities.  As we make time for these leisure activities, we should also keep our focus on the need for Mass and prayer.  This is especially important when we travel and our routine changes.  We are reminded that time for Mass and prayer should be included in our travel plans.  As Catholics, we are called to spend time with the Lord and we are encouraged to participate in the Mass in a spirit of reverence and respect.

When attending Mass, especially during the summer months, we are asked to exercise prudence and judgment.  Each year our Church leaders strive to remind the faithful of the need to dress modestly at Mass, since we are in the presence of the King of Kings. Our Catechism states that “…modesty guides how we look at others and behave toward them in conformity with the dignity of persons and their solidarity.”  It also states that modesty “…inspires one’s choice in clothing.” Certain summer apparel which may be appropriate for an informal meal or a picnic may not be appropriate for Mass.  Dressing appropriately helps us keep our focus on the Lord.

FATHER, CREATOR OF ALL, THANK YOU FOR THE SUMMER!
THANK YOU FOR THE WARMTH OF THE SUN AND THE INCREASED DAYLIGHT.
THANK YOU FOR THE BEAUTY I SEE AROUND ME AND FOR THE OPPORTUNITY

   TO BE OUTSIDE AND ENJOY YOUR CREATION.
THANK YOU FOR THE INCREASED TIME I HAVE TO BE WITH MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY,

   AND FOR THE MORE CASUAL PACE OF THE SUMMER SEASON.
DRAW ME CLOSER TO YOU THIS SUMMER.
TEACH ME HOW I CAN PRAY NO MATTER WHERE I AM OR WHAT I AM DOING.
WARM MY SOUL WITH THE AWARENESS OF YOUR PRESENCE

  AND LIGHT MY PATH WITH YOUR WORD AND COUNSEL.

As we reflect on this prayer, we are invited to pray daily and make time for the Lord.  He has provided us with this opportunity for rest and recreation.  Let us rejoice and be glad.
