This past Friday marked the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. As a nation we recalled the tragic deaths and injuries that occurred at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and on the fields of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. We also remembered those men and women who gave their lives or who were injured that day in the line of duty.
This day helps us to remember not only the events of this tragedy, but also reminds us of the dangers that continue to confront us in an unstable world. We are well aware of the conflicts which continue to rage in Ukraine and Iran and Israel, and in other nations and regions. We continue to offer special prayers for our men and women in uniform who defend our freedoms, and we also pray for their families and the military chaplains who assist them.
As Catholics, we are challenged to respond in faith to the pressing concerns of our brothers and sisters in need, and to remember in a special way all those who suffered in some way on that fateful day of September 11, 2001.
The media outlet, “PrayerVest”, provided a special “(9/11)” prayer. As an introduction to this prayer, the outlet stated, “On this day of remembrance, our hearts turn to the immense sacrifice made by so many. We recall the bravery of first responders who ran into danger, the courage of ordinary citizens who helped others, and the lives tragically cut short. This prayer is an offering to honor their memory, to acknowledge their selfless acts, and to seek God’s strength in remembering their ultimate sacrifice. It is a moment to reflect on the profound impact of their actions and to find inspiration in their courage, knowing that their legacy lives on in our hearts and in the values, they upheld. “
The prayer called the “Prayer for Remembrance” follows:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts
to remember the profound sacrifice made on September 11th.
Grant us the grace to honor the bravery of those who gave their lives,
especially the first responders and innocent civilians.
May their memory inspire us to live with courage and compassion.
Strengthen us to carry forward their legacy of selfless love and service.
We ask for Your peace to surround their families and
for Your enduring presence to comfort us all.
Amen.
As we reflect on this prayer, we are also invited to pray for peace among nations. We continue to ask for the special intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Queen of Peace, as we pray for peace in our world, peace in our homes, and peace in our hearts.
